Sam Cafe Zaferanieh is not just a café—it is an architectural meditation on ritual, rhythm, and reflection. Designed to elevate the daily act of brewing into a curated sensory experience, the space blends minimalism with emotional warmth. Through strategic use of material, light, and flow, Vandad Development created a setting where coffee becomes performance—and space becomes memory.
Sam Coffee Roasters, one of Iran’s leading specialty coffee brands, approached Vandad Development with the intent to expand their physical footprint with a flagship café in Zaferanieh—a neighborhood known for its refined character and discerning clientele. The goal was to create an architectural embodiment of the Sam brand, where coffee wasn’t just served, but performed as ritual. The space needed to blend warmth and minimalism, offer clarity in circulation, and allow for functional flexibility while showcasing product design, coffee gear, and the act of brewing itself. It had to feel both welcoming to passersby and memorable to those who stay.
The design revolved around transforming a relatively small, street-level commercial space into a seamless, sensory experience. Vandad Development proposed a stage-like layout, where the main brewing station sits at the visual center of the café, framed by architectural elements that enhance its presence. A full-height mirrored wall was introduced to visually double the space without using digital tricks—expanding perceived volume and amplifying light. Linear design logic guided the organization of materials and movement, from flooring patterns to counter design. The café needed to support efficient service, while also offering moments of pause, engagement, and reflection. Every detail—from sightlines to shelving—was composed to honor the sensory act of coffee.

The material palette was chosen to evoke warmth, tactility, and clarity. The main counter and display areas were crafted from solid wood paired with ceramic glass panels, providing durability and elegance. The flooring consisted of textured stone tiles with a linear motif, subtly guiding movement from entrance to bar. Walls were finished in off-white lime-based plaster, enhancing reflectivity and softness. The mirror wall, engineered to avoid glare or distortion, acts as a spatial amplifier. Built-in shelving, crafted in warm oak veneer, provided contrast to the otherwise restrained space. Accent tones were introduced through packaging design and ceramic accessories, adding visual energy without clutter. Lighting was carefully layered with indirect LED strips, pendant lights over the bar, and wall washers to sculpt ambient depth.

The café’s location on a heavily trafficked street posed immediate logistical hurdles. Material deliveries had to be executed during early hours or on weekends to avoid disrupting street flow. The compact nature of the unit demanded tight coordination between trades, particularly during mechanical, electrical, and millwork phases. The design brief demanded a high-end outcome within a tight construction budget, which meant that materials, finishes, and construction tolerances had to be carefully balanced. For example, the custom mirror wall had to be imported and installed without seams or distortion—a complex task made more difficult by the ceiling height constraints. Finally, every detail had to be coordinated around predefined coffee equipment layouts, requiring early collaboration between baristas, designers, and technical teams to ensure ergonomic success.
Vandad Ghooparanloo is a renowned professional engineer dedicated to the rehabilitation of historical buildings. Graduating with honors in civil and architectural engineering from a prestigious Canadian university in 2009, Vandad began his career in heavy construction, specializing in tunneling. He obtained his Professional Engineers Ontario certification in 2014, marking his competence and dedication in engineering.
Driven by a passion for historical preservation, Vandad moved to Iran in 2015. There, he collaborated with architects and engineers on a wide range of projects including high-rise buildings, museums, cafes, and offices. In 2016, he founded Vandad Development, focusing on design and renovation. His remarkable work on the Argo Museum earned the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2019, showcasing his skill in blending historical integrity with modern standards.
Vandad’s commitment to quality and innovation has earned him industry accolades and affiliations with prestigious organizations such as the Tunneling Association of Canada and the Middle Eastern Society of Engineers and Architects. His career exemplifies a unique blend of engineering expertise and cultural preservation.
